Who We Are: Birthed from the American dream, Patel Brothers is a family-owned business. Through determination and hard work, our family sought to achieve the freedom and opportunity that all immigrant families hoped for. Today, Patel Brothers owes its success to the perseverance, hard work and dedication of five generations. We are both proud and humbled to say that Patel Brothers is the largest Indian Grocery chain in America, with over 35 stores nationwide and still growing. Our Story: The desire to achieve more than just living and working for the wealth of another man, ignited the Patel family's wish to begin their own business. After years of working in the assembly lines of various factories throughout the city of Chicago, opportunity came knocking when Mafat Patel met Mr. Ramesh Trivedi. Mr. Travedi was looking to sell his Indian grocery business. Excited by the opportunity, Mafat Patel informed his brother, Tulsi Patel and his sister in law, Aruna Patel, and advised them to invest in this new venture. Both Tulsi and Aruna embraced the opportunity, not only as a business endeavor, but also as a way to give back to their community. Even with Chicago's growing Indian population, local grocery stores did not offer the ingredients to make a traditional Indian meal. In September of 1974, Tulsi and Aruna opened the first Patel Brothers store, at 2034 W. Devon Avenue.
